The Fire of Leadership: A Journey From Camper to Counselor

Just like a campfire, the journey to becoming a leader at MMR begins small but can grow into something that lights up the entire camp. The progression is simple and clear, but the impact is lasting and profound. Each stage of this journey represents a building block of leadership, service, and community.

Kindling the Flame: CILTS

For campers ages 13-16, the CILT (Campers In Leadership Training) program is where the journey of leadership begins. Just like kindling fuels a fire, CILT campers lay the foundation for their leadership growth by taking on hands-on responsibilities and learning the value of service under the guidance of our dedicated CILT leaders.

CILTs gain the skills and confidence to step into leadership roles while still enjoying the full camp experience. This program is designed to seamlessly integrate into an older camper’s daily life at MMR, meaning there’s no pre-registration or extra cost—campers simply apply once they arrive at camp and jump right in!

What You’ll Do as a CILT:

  • Shadow counselors to learn leadership in action
  • Plan and set up camp dances and special events
  • Prepare and serve a camp lunch for the community
  • Participate in leadership activities and team-building exercises

Igniting the Fire: Ember Crew

For our 16-17-year-old campers, the Ember Crew program is the next step in their leadership journey. Just like glowing embers that keep a campfire burning, Ember Crew members take on greater responsibility, giving back to the camp community in meaningful ways while embracing the heart of servant leadership.

Ember Crew participates alongside Kindling (CILT) campers in leadership activities but takes on an even greater role—leading by example and stepping up as mentors in the camp space. Because this is a personalized experience, spaces are limited to a small group each summer. Interested campers can reach out to us directly to begin their journey.

In appreciation of their contributions, Ember Crew members receive 25% off tuition as a reflection of their dedication to the camp community.

What You’ll Do as Part of Ember Crew:

  • Take part in hands-on service projects that support camp (painting, kitchen assistance, camp beautification, etc.).
  • Shadow and assist at an activity of your choice multiple times throughout the session, providing support to the counselor and learning from their leadership.
  • Create and lead a unique activity for one activity period during the second week, with counselor guidance.
  • Deepen your understanding of servant leadership and what it means to lead by supporting and uplifting others.
  • Mentor younger campers and set an example of MMR’s Servanthood Philosophy.

Fanning the Flames: Counselors

The ultimate goal for many campers is to step into the role of counselor or support staff once they turn 18+. Counselors and support staff keep the flames of MMR burning bright, helping to guide the next generation of campers while building on the leadership foundation they’ve laid throughout the years.

The Leadership Journey at MMR

At MMR, leadership isn’t about being in charge—it’s about serving the community, growing as an individual, and supporting others. From the spark of CILT to the embers of Crew and beyond, every step is designed to nurture leadership in a way that reflects our core values.
