BEFORE YOU BEGIN:

MOUNTAIN MEADOW RANCH is located 74 miles north of Reno, Nevada on the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. It lies 9 miles south of Susanville, California (pop. 15,000) Lassen's county-seat. Mountain Meadow operates three 19 day sessions and one 1-week session from late June through August with a limited enrollment of 100 boys and girls ages 7-17. Campers and counselors come not only from California , but from many parts of the U.S. and around the world.

MOUNTAIN MEADOW RANCH WAS ESTABLISHED by Jack and Jacquie Ellena in 1956 and has earned a reputation of excellence through the years as well as a very high rate of returning campers from one year to the next. Mountain Meadow has served two generations of camping families and is itself served by second-generation owner-directors. Founder-director Jack Ellena Sr. is still involved serving on the board of directors as was Jacquie until her death in January 2002. Their son Jack Jr. (Chip) with wife Jody are now directing and operating the working cattle and quarter-horse ranch as well as the real heart of Mountain Meadow, the Summer Camp.

MOUNTAIN MEADOW IS A MEMBER of the Western Association of Independent Camps and the American Camping Association. These organizations are dedicated to the development and maintenance of the highest standards of camping. The dignity and worth of each human being, from the youngest to the oldest, is emphasized at Mountain Meadow. LEADERSHIP/STAFF THAT REFLECT OUR OBJECTIVES IS IMPERATIVE. Selfishness, sarcasm, ridicule and impatience have no place at M.M.R. INTEGRITY, honesty, kindness, patience, genuine concern for others, belief in God, high values based on traditional Judeo-Christian morality and respect for our country are some of the qualities we look for in our camp staff. If these values are yours as well we encourage you to complete and return this staff application soon.

SUMMER CAMP AT MOUNTAIN MEADOW IS A "SPECIAL WORLD" and we want a staff who is content and happy living in a camp environment for a nine week stay without feeling deprived of city life and the stimulus provided there. Being a part of the Mountain Meadow Staff and the Camp Family is an experience like no other. The camp is a total immersion environment where the staff is dedicated to making the summer a fun, safe, special and memorable one for the many campers at Mountain Meadow. This is not a do as you please, kick-back, part time type vacation for staff-members, although with the right attitude and understanding the summer will be very enjoyable and rewarding. It is hard work carrying with it the very real responsibilities of caring for other people's children. We are looking for people who understand this obligation and who are willing to completely plunge in with high spirits and a positive attitude of working together. This includes following through on projects and taking the initiative whenever needed. These are important considerations when taking into account the best interest of all involved, Mountain Meadow's continued success and making the most of your potential as a member of our staff.

THE POSITION OF CAMP COUNSELOR will provide a great opportunity to further your leadership and counseling skills as well as the invaluable opportunity to contribute to the personal development of the children you work with. Before any contract is signed each applicant will be interviewed by the directors (if at all possible) We feel it is important that we both have the opportunity to meet each other and share our basic philosophies and goals of working with young people. Our acceptance of you will indicate a COMPLETE FAITH in your ability to fulfill the position in a creditable manner. Unless you have completed our CILT program you must have completed at least one year of college or its equivalent. WE DO NOT EMPLOY STAFF WHO SMOKE, CHEW OR USE DRUGS. We do not hire staff with any body piercing other than ears, hair worn in dreadlocks or with excessive or negative tattooing. (Please discuss any tattoos with directors.) We also require that every staff member have a minimum of seven hours of sleep at night. Before a personal interview we must receive your completed application. Contracts are contingent on our receiving back a clean and clear criminal background check by June 1st.

THE PAY SCALE VARIES. Staff pay scale starts at $200 per week plus room and board, laundry and evening snacks. Specialists who head such activities as water skiing, horseback riding, ceramics, tennis or aquatics start at $230 per week. Increases from the starting scale are based on experience, education and special certifications. All staff members are required to participate in pre-camp orientation and training several days prior to the start of camp. All staff must either have current CPR and Basic First Aid certification or participate and complete certification courses during staff training.

MOUNTAIN MEADOW RANCH PHILOSOPHY AND PROGRAM; The primary purpose of camp is FUN! To achieve this purpose we keep our program informal and flexible with a rich variety of activities that provide stimulus to the imagination and challenge strength and skills. We strive in all our camp aspects to assure our campers the opportunity to live for a time in the wide-open spaces with real ranch experiences and the adventurous life of the out-of-doors.

AT Mountain Meadow BOYS AND GIRLS have the greatest summers of their lives scarcely realizing the growth and development that is taking place. Here, among those in their own age groups, occur the proper adjustments in personality, the development of positive character, the determining of values, the habits of self-reliance and leadership so essential to their future success.

THE PROGRAM PROVIDES individual instruction and supervision geared to each camper's capacity and need. Campers have their choice of activities and are encouraged to take part in every phase of camp life.

CAMPERS LIVE IN CABIN GROUPS with two to three counselors (depending on the size of the group). Counselors have over-all responsibility for the campers living in their particular cabin while both inside and away. Cabin inspections are a tradition at MMR and campers are highly motivated to high standards of cleanliness and order. Ice cream sundaes and pizza parties are some of the rewards that help to stimulate motivation to cleanup, but the final responsibility for cabin cleanliness and morale fall on the counselors.
