How you think when you’re trying to lose weight can make or break you. This is also true for children. Successful weight loss camps make the campers’ self-esteem their top priority. Still, it’s a challenge to make those overweight/obese children to like themselves. After all, there’s such a stigma to being overweight in the media and by peers. However, there are five motivational techniques parents can use for themselves and their children that will help in the weight loss process.
Technique 1 – Keep Track Of Your Progress
When your child is at weight loss camp (also known by many people as fat camp), counselors and dieticians will weigh them once a week. This enables the child to see what kind of progress they are making. It helps them to discover that they can still eat and have fun while they try to lose their excessive pounds. Some campers will opt for a journal that helps to keep track of the progress and any feelings they have about the entire process. This technique would be wonderful to implement at home.
Technique 2 – Have Some Fun
Remember that summer camps are supposed to be fun; this also includes weight loss summer camps. These camps also include kayaking, swimming, volleyball and more to keep the kids’ interest as well as help them to lose weight. Fun doesn’t just end with the physical activity; it also extends to food selection. Most weight loss camps will still offer the food that kids love to eat including cereal, pizza and tater tots but they maintain low-calorie standards when the food is being prepared. Camps will teach kids about how to make healthy foods and how to select them; all things parents can allow their children to do at home.
Technique 3 – Support Group
When a child goes to a weight loss camp, the camp counselors won’t be the only ones encouraging a child to make smart, healthy choices. Camp-goers also persuade one another to make smart choices whether it’s about food or activities. These kids are taught to be supportive of one another. It’s certainly a drastic difference from the constant ridicule obese children face in school. This type of support encourages the child to lose the weight so that they live a healthy lifestyle when they get back home. On top of that, each time they lose pounds, they can share this victory with their new friends who also have goals to lose weight.
Technique 4 – Establish and Maintain Goals
Camp counselors will stress the benefits of having a healthy lifestyle including more energy, self-image improvement and a healthy long life. Campers then have a choice of which goals they consider most important and strive to achieve it as they lose weight. These are goals they can bring back with them. When they are tempted to cheat, they can remember their goals. Remember to set some short-term goals as well as long-term ones to stay motivated.
Technique 5 – Be Educated
It’s very important to know the kinds of food that your child is consuming and the consequences associated with it. It’s imperative that they are motivated to make those right decisions. Both children and adults need to learn the importance of healthy food choices, nutrition and exercise and the impact of not making these types of choices every day. By knowing these differences, children will stay motivated on their course of losing weight.
